Life has its fair share of ups and downs—we all know that. Whether it’s a job change, relationship problems, financial troubles, illness, etc., how you cope with major life events is vital to your overall well-being. There are good ways to cope, such as seeking out support or engaging in physical activity. There are also bad ways to cope, such as substance abuse or avoiding the problem. At Arcara, through therapy, our licensed psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners can help you learn healthy coping skills so that you can better manage stressors in your life both today and down the road.

The first part of coping skills therapy is an overall psychiatric assessment which we will conduct during your first appointment. We’ll discuss your personal and medical history, then focus on the issues presently in your life that are causing you difficulties. We’ll talk about how you are currently coping, both positively and negatively, and then provide concrete lifestyle suggestions to help you learn better coping strategies. These suggestions may include advice on diet, exercise, and your daily routine. Sometimes small adjustments can make a big difference. We can also teach you relaxation techniques to incorporate into your life. Additionally, sometimes we may suggest nutritional supplements or refer you to a psychiatrist we have a good working relationship with. If necessary, we can prescribe medication after discussing its benefits and risks with you. Whatever your present situation, healthy coping skills are invaluable.
